*Zadie Ledford Byers' 2nd Husband, Brown, or not

This man isn't my family line, but I spent so much time researching him, I thought I'd include the info in case any of his descendants happen across this webpage.

My Grandmother (Wilhelmenia) told me that after Hicks Byers' death, Zadie married a man named Charlie Brown, and had a son named Charlie Brown. She said Charlie Brown, the husband, was a drinker and they didn't get along well, and one day he ran off and was never heard from again.
She also didn't know what happened to Charlie Brown, the son.

The info the Byers' descendant sent to me said that Zadie had 2nd married to Jace Brown.

Our first bit of information is no.help.at.all.
J.C. could be Jace, or Charlie.

J.C. Brown, age 48
Mrs. E.C. Byers, age 39
August 29,1907, Clay County, NC
by R.L. Watson, Justice of Peace
wit: Frances Cabe, D.A. Byers, D.E. Smart

2.
In 1908, a J.C. Brown files for a Soldier's Pension in Clay County, NC
stating he is 60 years old, and enlisted on Co. "E", 69 Reg. N.C. State Troops, on or about...1861.

IF this is the same J.C. Brown Zadie married, he aged 12 years in one year. But I can't find any sign of any other J.C., Jason, or Charles/Charlie Brown in the Clay County, NC area prior to the marriage record dated 1907, or the Soldier Pension app dated 1908.

I looked up "Co."E", 69 Reg. NC State Troops, and it says that most of the men enlisted in Co."E" were from Haywood Co, NC.

(Notes on Pension app: if J.C. was 60 in 1908, he was born in 1848, and would have been 13yo when he enlisted in 1861. Also, I was unable to locate him in the NPS Soldiers and Sailors Database.)

3.
In 1910, Clay County, Brasstown, NC census, we find:
Jahue (index says Johne) Brown, age 59 (ca.1851) Widowed
Noble P. Brown, son, age 18
Lula M. Brown, daughter, age 8

In 1920, Clay County, Brasstown, NC census:
Jason C. Brown, age 73 (ca. 1847), widowed
Myrtle, daughter, age 16

4.
She lists her parents on the marriage certificate as J.C. Brown and Maggie Brown (both dec'd).

While death certificates are filled out by next-of-kin and not always accurate, it's often something to go on, and it appears Myrtle's turned out to be correct.
She was born March 38, 1902, in Haywood County, NC.
It says she lived in (Clay County, NC) for 24 years, so her family moved to Clay County approximately 1904. (Three years before J.C. and Zadie married.)
It lists her parents as J.C. Brown and Maggie Caldwell.

5.
North Carolina marriage records turn up:
J.C. Brown, age 33 (ca.1847) son of Hugh Brown, dec'd, and Caroline Brown, married on May 26, 1880, in Haywood Co, NC, to Maggie Calwell, age 18 (ca.1862), dau of James Calwell and Jane Calwell, dec'd.

6.
A search of Find-A-Grave finds at Pine Log Baptist Church Cemetery, Brasstown, Clay Co, NC:
JWC Brown, b. March 7, 1847 (the listing says 1847, I'm pretty sure the stone says something different) d. Unknown (after 1920, before January 11, 1928), and
Maggie E. Brown, wife of JWC Brown, age about 44 (She died in 1906, so ca.1862-3).

7.
We know from Myrtle Brown Fleming's Death Cert that she was born in Haywood Co, NC in 1902, so chances are her family was in Haywood Co, NC in 1900. (Not always, but it's the most logical first place to look.)
1900 Haywood Co, Jonathon Creek Twnshp, NC
Jason C. Brown, age 54, born March 1846
Margaret E., wife, age 40, born Dec.1859
Daisy, daughter, age 15, born Feb.1885
Minnie(?), daughter, age 13, born May 1887
Noble, son, age 10, born May 1890
Bessie(?), daughter, age 4, born Aug.1895

Margaret (Maggie) stated in this census record that she birthed 8 children, but only 6 were still living.
I didn't dig deep, so the info may be out there, but the only other info that volunteered itself was a Haywood Co, NC marriage record for Manson Brown, son of J.C. & Maggie Brown, to Jenny Calwell on Feb or Mar 5, 1899.
Manson (Asbury) Brown was born July 1880, or 1882, or 1889 or 7 March 1888.
Jennie was born Feb 1882.
Some of their children were:
Hugh, born Jan 1900
Glennia, born Sept 19, 1903 in Haywood Co, died Oct 3, 1992 in Asheville, Buncombe Co, NC
Valerie, born Jan 3, 1905 in Haywood Co, died July 14, 1986 in Asheville, Buncombe Co, NC
(?)Crate Peterson Brown, born Oct 19, 1913 Haywood Co, NC
Jessie Lee, born Feb 5, 1915 Haywood Co, died July 28, 1915 Haywood Co.

8.
Also in the same area (Jonathons Creek Twnshp) we find:
Charles Brown, born Feb 1876, age 24
Maggie, born May 1882, age 18
David, born Feb 1900, age 3mos.

Haywood Co Marriage Records:
Charley Brown, b.1876, son of J.C. & Lucinda Brown, married Feb or March 17, 1899, to Maggie L. Owen, daughter of D.A. Owen, Jr.

Then, we find a Death Certificate for Charlie Brown, died Sept 16, 1916.
His father is listed as J.C. Brown, and his mother as Caroline Plott. (see #5 above, and #9 below)

9.
There is no 1890 census information available.
In 1880 Haywood Co, Jonathons Creek Twnshp, we find:
Caroline Brown, age 56, Wd.
Margaret L. Brown, age 11 (ca.1869), grandaughter
(Ted or Fred?) Brown, age 7 (ca.1873), grandson
William C. Brown, age 4 (ca.1876), grandson (I believe this Charles/Charlie from #8 above)

Maggie Brown, b.1871, daughter of Jace C. Brown, married R.E. Fletcher on Aug. 9, 1891. (Probably Margaret L.)

J.C. Brown and Maggie Calwell were married May 26, 1880, in Haywood Co, but I can't seem to locate them in the census records.  The census was taken June2nd & 3rd, 1880, so maybe they were on a Honeymoon, leaving his kids with his mother. I dunno.

10.
1870 Haywood Co, NC census, I can't seem to locate (Martha) Caroline Brown, or son Enoch Asbury Brown.  Son Achillis "Killis" Brown apparently died in 1868 (see #11 below).

In the Haywood Co, Crabtree Dist, next door to Thomas Smith, there is:
J.C. Brown, age 22
Lucinda, age 18

Jahue Chasteen Brown, son of Hugh Brown dec'd (index says John, but it really looks like Jahue)
Lucinda Smith, daughter of Thos Smith
married Dec. 24, 1868

11.
Caroline Brown, age 40 (ca.1820) Wd.
Enoch A., age 17
Rebecca J., age 15
Jahu C., age 12 (index says John C.)(Should be more like 16, see #12 below)
Francis C., age 12 (f)
Margaret S., age 7

Also in 1860 Haywood Co. is the older son, "Killis", three different times:
1. Jonathons Creek PO - Killis Stepp (where did Stepp come from?) age 21, Manervy age 25, Margaret A. age 10mos.
2. Pigeon River PO - Kellis Browm age 21, Manervy age 24, Margaret A. age 10 mos.
3. (Right Next Door) - Killis Brown age 21, Manervy age 24, Margaret age 10 mos.

Info from an internet message board says (I don't have the sources of the info) Achilles L.orI. "Killis" Brown
born Nov.13, 1841 Haywood Co.NC
died March 17,1868 Haywood Co. NC
married Minerva Allison on Aug 10,1858
*Fought on Union side during civil war

12.
Hugh Brown, age 36
Martha C., age 32
Achillis, age 12
Asbury, age 10
Rhebecca J., age 8
Jahugh, age 6 (I think the index reads Johnne, but it pretty clearly Jahugh)
Francis C., age 1

13.
There are 3 Hugh Brown's in the 1840 Haywood Co, NC Census.
One is age 60-70, one is age 30-40, and the other is age 20-30.

The 20-30 Hugh had one son age Under 5. I'm guessing, Achillis.

14.

Final Thoughts:
From the first time we see him, Jahugh/Jahu/Jahue Chasteen/Jason/Jace/J.C./J.W.C. has gone by several names, and different ages.

His middle name appears to have not been Charles/Charlie, but there's always the possibility my Grandmother had his name wrong. Maybe it was Jace. Maybe she was confused with the son's name.

The J.C. Brown that married Mrs. E.C. Byers, they definitely did have a son named Charles/Charlie.

Thing is, the J.C. in the above research already had a son named Charles/Charlie, with his first wife, Lucinda.

Maybe Zadie didn't know that, and named the son without asking J.C. Maybe J.C. forgot he already had a son named Charlie. Maybe he couldn't admit it because he told Zadie he was about 10 years younger than he was.

So, I say, No, the J.C./Jace in the above research definitely isn't the J.C./Jace married to Mrs. E. C. (Zadie) Byers....but then as soon as I do, I say, but it's way too coincidental that the above J.C./Jase moved to Clay Co, Brasstown, NC, three years before Zadie married J.C., and there is no other J.C. Brown to be found, so it must be him.
They married, maybe didn't get along, they split up.
She claims to be a Widow and went back to using her previous married name, Byers, except in the 1930 census, Byers is written, then Brown written over the top of it.
He also claims to be a Widower in the rest of the census records.

After all that work, I'm still Undetermined.
