Tony's Notes

1923-April 5: Tri-County Newspaper Mrs. Mary McIntire dies in Gainesville - Mrs. Mary McIntire, aged 84, died at Gainesville on last Sunday, April 1, 1923. Her body was brought here last Monday and buried at Bethlehem Baptist Church, where she had been a member for the past fifty four years. Mrs. McIntire was Miss Mary Gastley before marriage and a sister to Mr. T.J. Gastley and moved to this country from Germany with her parents at the age of seven years and like her brother and other relatives when she reached her adopted country she became a true and loyal American. She was a (good) woman and highly respected by all. She leaves nine children and a host of friends and relatives.

James Lafayette WALDREP is my great grandfather.James married Nancy Emily Wheeler(1860-1905), daughter of Thomas Hamilton Wheeler and Mary Ann GASTLEY, on 24 Jan 1878 in , Habersham County, GA. Nancy Emily was born on 5 Apr 1860 in , Habersham Co, GA. She died on 25 Aug 1905 in , Habersham Co, GA. She is buried in the Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery in Clarkesville, GA. Emily's father Thomas Hamilton Wheeler died fighting with Company C, 9th. Battalion Infantry Regiment Georgia CSA at Shelbyville, TN, in 1862. Emily was their only child. Her mother, Mary Ann Gastley married again in 1869 to Richard Marvin McIntyre(1845-1915) and together they had several children. Apparently, Nancy Emily Wheeler was adopted by her step father and took his last name. Nancy Emily's mother was often called "mother Mac" and spoke in broken English and her German native language. Mary Ann Gastley was born in Baden, Wuerttemberg, Germany 4 Apr 1838 and died in Hall County Georgia 1 Apr 1923. She came through Savannah, GA as a young child when her parents imigrated to America. Her father was John Gastley(1811-1892) and her mother was Ann Gastley(1811-1870) both from Baden, Germany. The photo below was taken around 1904 at the family home in Habersham, Georgia.

(Needs Ancestry Account)

~What I know is that my family came from Germany, then Holland, through Savannah, GA and settled in Habersham County, GA. More specifically Clarkesville. John Gastley is the earliest name I can link to, he was born in 1811 and buried at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Clarkesville on 1/12/1892. I have gathered information about Thomas Joseph (John's son) and all those I can since, but know nothing of anyone else from John's family

~William Thomas Gastley's parents were John Andrew "Andy" Gastley, b. abt. 1868 in GA, d. 22 Apr 1938 in Habersham Co., GA, and (I think) Sarah Emma Hill, b. abt. 1870 in GA, d. 9 May 1966 in Habersham Co., GA

Andy's parents were Thomas J. Gastley, b. abt. 1848 in GA, d. 28 Mar 1934 in Habersham Co., GA and Sarah M., b. abt. 1849 in GA, d. abt 1921 in Habersham Co., GA.

Thomas J.'s parents were John Gastley (spelled in 1850 as Goslin or Gosley, in 1860 as Ghastty, and in 1880 as Gastly), b. abt. 1811 in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany, d. aft. 1880, and Amy (or Emily), b. abt 1811 in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany, d. bet. 1870-1880, probably in Habersham Co., GA

~John Gastley born 1811 in Germany died 1/12/1892 Habersham County GA buried Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery - Toombstone - John Gastley born 1811 - died 1/12/1892 age 81 years. - spelling varies in Census records - wife is Emily born abt 1811-1818 Germany died before 1880 in Habersham County GA - no headstone - this puzzles me as all other members of the family have wonder, large memorial stones. Was she disliked?
John and Emily Gastley had at least 4 children:
Mary Ann Gastley Wheeler McIntyre (My line) born4/4/1838 Germany
John G. Gastley born 4/12/1851 GA (mentally retarded)
Jacob Gastley born 6/12/1856 GA (mentally retarded)
Thomas Joseph Gastley born 7/29/1848
all of the children are buried at Bethlehem Baptist Cemetery

Mary Ann married first Thomas Hamilton Wheeler 1859 Habersham County GA - they had a least one child John George Wheeler born 10/12/1861 (my line) and perhaps a daughter Nancy E. born April 1860? She is listed with Mary Ann and her second husband Richard McIntyre in the 1870 Census..

Tri County Newspaper 4/5/1923 "Mrs. Mary McIntire, age 84, died at Gainesville on last Sunday, April 1,1923. ..buried at Bethlehem Baptist Church, where she had been a member for the past fifty four years. Gastley Clarkesville, Charlie Gastley of Fairburn and Joseph Gastley of Seneca S.C...

Of note is that Mary Ann's obituary states she was from Germany and Thomas H's states they were from Holland??

~My name is Jennifer Gastley, I'm from Habersham County. My grandfather was John Earl Gastley, his father was John Andrew. Everything that I have ever heard about the Gastley's is that they moved here from Germany. I have never heard anything about them coming from Holland.

Think your William A. Wheeler is the father to my George Wheeler. He moved onto Habersham county and died there in 1859. His daughter, Nancy Ann Wheeler, married my gggfather, Robert E. Martin. They moved along with other Wheeler's to Walker County, GA and then to Newton County, AK around 1870. Think Nancy's brother Isham Wheeler went with them. Do you have any Martin info in your Wheeler info. I acquired George Wheeler's Will at the LDS family history library this summer while visiting family in Salt Lake City. His will lists 3 grandsons. George Martin, Rial M. Martin and Robert Martin.

I am related to your Wheelers. George is my husband's ancestor through George's son, Colby. Colby's son, Isham, moved to Newton Co., AR, in 1850's. My e-mail is granny@arn.net. George's father is Thomas of Elbert Co., GA.

My Nancy Ann Wheeler was Colby's daughter and Isham Wheeler's sister.

I am a descendent of Wm.Wheeler, Isham's bro.
Do you have any info. on Wm? His middle name? Marriage record in Berkeley Co WV (1865) gave his parents as Colby & Jane and
birthplace Habersham Co., Ga (about 1832)

Isham Wheeler married Catherine Anderson 1854 in Habersham. Her father was probably William Anderson. I have no information about this family. Can anyone help? Isham's father, Coleby, was in Walker Co., GA, in 1854.

Colby lived in Habersham for awhile, and was recorded in the 1830 census, before moving on to Walker. He is the son of George Wheeler and Elizabeth Lydia Underwood. George listed NC as his home state in the 1850 census. I was informed recently that George is the son of Thomas Wheeler of Elbert Co. GA, and originally from NC.

The LDS [familysearch.com] listing by Amy Elizabeth Thomas
gives the family of George Wheeler, including Colby and my ancestor Arpie. Another daughter, Mary Polly, married John Martin; they had a son R.M. Martin who married Sarah Anderson Mar 27, 1851 in Habersham. The father of Sarah is listed as William Anderson. Sarah is listed as born CA 1834 and died CA 1888 in GA. The listing [from bible records] says that R.M.Martin was know as Matt, and probably died in 1863 with the Army of Tenn. He may be the Rob't Martin who was living with George and Lydia Wheeler in 1850 in the 12th district. A separate listing on page 36 of "These Men Wore Grey" by Karen Ledford
states that Sarah was born June 18, 1834 and died Oct. 26, 1888. She is buried in Ebenezer Meth. Cemetery near Hollywood GA.

Your Isham Wheeler and Sarah Anderson moved to Newton County, AR in the 1870's. He went there with my gggrandfather Robert E. and Nancy Ann Wheeler Martin. Nancy Ann Wheeler and Isham was children of Colbey Wheeler. They are buried in Sandhill and Red Rock cemeteries, Newton County, AR.

reponse to query of Jan 2000. The R. M. Martin and Sarah Anderson mentioned is believed to be Rial M. Martin. My gggrandfather was Robert Martin, who was emunerated with George and Wheeler in 1850. He moved with Isam Wheeler (son of Colbey Wheeler)and family to Newton County, AR. There are 3 of us "cuzs" working on this line. I have always believed that Robert Martin's father was indeed the John Martin you mentioned. His widow mother, Elizabeth Terrell Martin and brother John's brother, Philip Martin, came to Habersham County in the 1820 land lottery. Elzabeth's father Simon Terrell was made guardian of her children when her husband John Martin died in Franklin County in 1811.

Thomas Hamilton Wheeler Notes
married 12/1/1859 Habersham County, GA Book B-171 [H.H. Ash.FTW] married 12/1/1859 Habersham County, GA Book B-171

Per Barbara Sook's in Emily Gastley (*Mary Ann Gastley) records she saw a document that stated she was the widow of Thomas Hamilton Wheeler. Her grandfather, John George Wheeler had a Uncle named Jake (Jacob) who was a brother to his father. She also mentioned a William F. Wheeler. I traced this gentleman and it appears that he and his brother Thomas were the sons of Richard Wheeler of Franklin County GA - these gentlemen are not our line as I can tell. Thomas is living with his father in the 1860 census and William F. is next door. Our Thomas was married in 1860 to Emily Gastley (*Mary Ann Gastely). John George Wheeler always stated that he was 13 months old when his father died. That would mean that Thomas H. Wheeler died in November 1862.
just for thought

Granny, Ella Ree Stover, told the story of her Grandfather Wheeler promising to leave her mother, Mary Elizabeth Wheeler Stover a farm when he died. He told her if she left her first husband, Charles Miles, that he would provide a farm for her. When he died he left all of his boys farms and didn't leave the girls anything at all. Uncle Red, Joseph Chastain Stover, personally went there to read the will, he was sure there was some mistake but the will did leave her out completely.

Also, I was told by Granny that when George Wheeler died he had no cash money and no one could locate it. The family thought he had alot of money and he was known for buring his money in jars around his property. Granny was in New Orleans and went to see a fortune teller a few months after his death. Of course she didn't believe in them and was just having fun with a Army friend. The fortune teller told her that she had just lost a family member and that his money was missing. She then proceeded to tell Granny where to find it. I ask Granny if she ever went to look for it and she said NO WAY!! That the lady scared her to death and she would not dare go look.
